You hear the word all the time, “duvet”, but do you really know what it means?  Well, depending on where you live in the world, bed duvet covers can be several different things.  For example, the word “duvet” (pronounced “due-vay”) means “down” in Old French, and is basically the same thing as a down comforter.  Bed duvet covers are also referred to as a “duvet insert” by some American interior designers even though they originated in Europe and were originally filled with any type of feathers that were available at the time.

In the US today, when we talk about bed duvet covers, we are usually talking about a cover that goes over our comforter.  Many people around the world, such as in Europe and Canada, will refer to a down comforter as a duvet though, so some will thing that bed duvet covers mean the whole comforter.  Depending on what you are looking for, you will want to be clear about it when ordering or purchasing bed duvet covers either online or in a store.
Keep in mind that many people will consider bed duvet covers to be the protective, decorative cover that goes over a down comforter – kind of like a pillow case.  When ordering bed duvet covers, make sure that you are ordering the right thing so that you get what you really need instead of a whole new comforter or just a cover.  This will keep you happy and save you from having to return an item or buy something else.
